Environmental Complexity and Cognitive Enrichment
Table of Contents

Partner Institution: James Cook University

Environmental enrichment plays a vital role in the cognitive and behavioural health of captive elasmobranchs. This project examines how different forms of environmental complexity influence:

  • Spatial learning and exploratory behaviour
  • Social interactions and stress resilience
  • Habitat preference and daily activity patterns

Experimental tanks will include varied substrates, shelters, water flow regimes and visual features to simulate natural habitats and assess the effectiveness of each enrichment type.
