Electrosensory Deterrents for Rays
Table of Contents

Partner Institution: Macquarie University

This study explores whether controlled electrical pulses can deter rays from baited hooks and gillnets, effectively reversing the principle of electrofishing. The research includes:

  • Baited boards equipped with variable-frequency electrodes
  • Measurement of avoidance behaviour and muscle twitch responses
  • Optimisation of pulse parameters to maximise deterrence while minimising harm

The goal is to develop a selective, species-specific deterrent that protects rays without affecting target fisheries.
