A Gentle Ambassador With an Extraordinary Journey
Patrisha the Green Sea Turtle
Patrisha (affectionately known as Pati) is one of Irukandji’s most loved residents, a calm, curious and resilient green sea turtle whose journey has touched thousands of visitors. Her story shines a light on the challenges facing marine turtles in Australian waters and the importance of ongoing conservation work.
From Rescue to Recovery — and a New Forever Home
Patrisha’s Journey
Patrisha was rescued in South West Rocks on 10 August 2020 after being found in a severely weakened state. She was suffering from Float Syndrome, a buoyancy disorder that traps turtles at the water’s surface.
Unable to dive, feed properly or escape danger, turtles with this condition are extremely vulnerable to: Predators, Boat strikes, Storms and rough seas, Starvation, Exhaustion
Patrisha underwent 10 months of rehabilitation at Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary, followed by further diagnostic testing at Sea World. Despite extensive treatment, her buoyancy issues remained unchanged, meaning she could never safely return to the ocean.
But her story didn’t end there.
Patrisha came to Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters, where she now thrives in a safe, purpose-designed environment. With her quirky personality, gentle nature and impressive appetite, she has become a powerful ambassador for marine conservation.
Curious, Calm and Endlessly Endearing
Patrisha is known for her sweet, inquisitive nature. She glides gracefully through her lagoon and often swims over to greet guests during educational sessions. Children especially adore her, and she’s patient enough to let them take in every moment.
Her presence helps demystify marine turtles, allowing visitors to form a genuine emotional connection with these ancient animals.
